New privacy provisions in the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988 affecting private sector organizations came into effect on 21st December 2001. Organisations can choose to be bound by a privacy code that would need to be approved by the Federal Privacy Commissioner. If not, the National Privacy Principles (NPPs) apply to them. The NPPs aim to ensure that organizations that hold information about people handle that information in a responsible manner.
